Must watch - How riot police should be doing it! (South Korea)
Must watch - How riot police should be doing it! (South Korea)
South Korean riot police use ancient Roman warfare tactics to control crowds. Information about tactics can be derived from accounts of battles, but the very military manuals known to have existed and to have been used extensively by commanders, have not survived. Perhaps the greatest loss is the book of Sextus Julius Frontinus. But parts of his work were incorporated in the records of the historian Vegetius. The importance of the choice of ground is pointed out. There is an advantage of height over the enemy and if you are pitting infantry against cavalry, the rougher the ground the better. The sun should be behind you to dazzle the enemy. If there is strong wind it should blow away from you, giving advantage to your missiles and blinding the enemy with dust. In the battle line, each man should have three feet of space, while the distance between the ranks is given as six feet. Thus 10'000 men can be placed in a rectangle about 1'500 yards by twelve yards, and it was advised not to extend the line beyond that. The normal arrangement was to place the infantry in the centre and the cavalry on the wings. The function of the latter was to prevent the centre from being outflanked and once the battle turned and the enemy started to retreat the cavalry moved forward and cut them down. - Horsemen were always a secondary force in ancient warfare, the main fighting being done by the infantry. It was recommended that if your cavalry was weak it was to be stiffened with lightly armed foot soldiers. Vegetius also stresses the need for adequate reserves. These could prevent an enemy from trying to envelope one's own forces, or could fend off enemy cavalry attacking the rear of the infantry. Alternatively, they could themselves move to the sides and perform an enveloping manoeuver against an opponent. The position to be taken up by the commander was normally on the right wing. The tortoise was a essentially defensive formation by which the legionaries would hold their shields overhead, except for the front rows, thereby creating a kind of shell-like armour shielding them against missiles from the front or above.- published: 22 May 2012

BBC News Is South Korean education 'best in world'?
New international league tables on education are expected to make disappointing reading for many British parents. The tables, which focus on the teaching of maths, will be published on Tuesday. The last similar survey showed the UK in 28th position out of 65 countries - and the latest figures are unlikely to show much improvement. The best results are expected to come from East Asian countries such as China, Singapore and South Korea. But there can be heavy costs and extremely long hours for students in South Korea. The K-pop effect - South Korea: How South Korea's youth are turning to surgery in an attempt to look like popstars. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65136 Viral sensastion 'Gangnam style' sparked imitations worldwide. Yet closer to home, the dream to be like such K-Pop idols is driving young South Koreans to a darker level of imitation: plastic surgery. "Once people graduate almost all of them get double-eyelid surgery", explains Gina, who recently left high-school. "In Korea they say, 'please make my nose into the style of this star'." In the district that is home to K-Pop's major entertainment companies there are over 300 plastic surgery clinics on a single street. But some fear this growing beauty obsession is threatening young people's sense of identity; "they treat their body as a product. They are losing the meaning of who they are". North and South Korea exchange fire across western sea border - 31 March 2014
North and South Korea have exchanged fire into the sea across the disputed western sea border, South Korea says. North Korea announced early on Monday that it would hold live-fire drills in seven parts of the border area. South Korea says it returned fire after North Korean shells landed in its territorial waters. The area has been a flashpoint between the two Koreas. The UN drew the western border after the Korean War, but North Korea has never recognised it. In late 2010, four South Koreans were killed on a border island by North Korean artillery fire. 'Responded with fire' The live-fire exercises were announced by North Korea in a faxed message from its military to the South's navy. The exercises would take place in seven border areas, the message said. South Korean had warned of immediate retaliation if any ordinance crossed the border. "Some of the shells fired by North Korea dropped in our area and our side responded with fire," a military spokesman told AFP news agency. "For the moment, both sides are firing into the sea." South Korea's Yonhap news agency said "several rounds" of North Korean shells landed south of the Northern Limit Line, as the disputed border is known. In response, South Korea's military shot "dozens of artillery shells with K-9 self-propelled howitzers" and despatched F-15K fighter jets, the agency said. Residents of a border island, Baengnyeong, were evacuated into shelters, reports said. In November 2010, North Korea fired shells at the border island of Yeonpyeong, killing two marines and two civilians. It said it was responding to South Korean military exercises in the area. Earlier that year, a South Korean warship sank near Baengnyeong island with the loss of 46 lives. Seoul says Pyongyang torpedoed the vessel but North Korea denies any role in the incident. 'New form' test The latest incident comes days after North Korea test-fired two medium-range Nodong missiles over the sea, its first such launch since 2009. South Korean nuclear envoy meets with representatives of U.S. and Japan
South Korea, the United States and Japan will hold a meeting of their top nuclear negotiators in Washington on this Monday. Upon his arrival to the U.S. capital,... Seoul's nuclear envoy also hinted about holding separate bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart. Shin Se-min reports. The newly-appointed South Korean envoy to the six-party talks, Hwang Joon-kook is in the U.S. capital for talks with his American and Japanese counterparts on drawing up countermeasures and preventative steps to deal with North Korea's latest provocations. According to South Korean officials, Hwang is scheduled to meet with Washington's special envoy Glyn Davies, and Japanese foreign ministry director general Junichi Ihara on Monday. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Washington, Hwang said the talks are designed to reaffirm coordination among the three nations, in regards to further provocative acts by North Korea. The South Korean official also hinted that there might be a chance for a bilateral meeting with Tokyo's chief nuclear envoy... something that didn't happen the last time the three countries met in this format last November. If the meeting is held, it will reflect South Korea's push for strengthening security partnership with Japan despite a number of unresolved territorial and historical disputes. Hwang said it would be "unnatural" for the nuclear envoys of neighboring countries not to meet. Any talks that might occur would center on the North Korean nuclear threat, and Hwang said Seoul could not rule out the possibility that Pyongyang will make good on its threat to conduct a fourth nuclear test. At the United Nations headquarters Friday, North Korea's deputy ambassador to the UN, Ri Tong-il repeated that threat. He said Pyongyang would carry out a new form of nuclear test to protect itself from the U.S., which he says is "hell-bent on regime change." Shin Se-min, Arirang News.- published: 07 Apr 2014

South Korea to boost military readiness after third suspected North Korean drone found
Our top story this Monday afternoon... South Korea is on alert after the military discovered yet another suspected North Korean drone on a mountain in Gangwon-do Province, some 1-hundred-30 kilometers south of the inter-Korean border. We have our Kim Hyun-bin standing by at the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul... so Hyun-bin, it must be very concerning that this is the third drone found on South Korean territory in a matter of weeks... what counter measures does Seoul plan to take? Hey Conn-young. South Korea's defense ministry announced a few hours ago that key commanders from every branch of the military held an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the drone infiltration. Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin urged all facets of the military to maintain flawless operation readiness in regards to the suspected North Korean drones and other threats from Pyongyang. Kim emphasized that the three drones found in South Korea in recent days were for surveillance purposes but they could be used for terror or attack purposes. The ministry says if the drones are confirmed to have come from the North, Pyongyang is in clear violation of Korea's armistice agreement as well as an international agreement on flying over another country's air space without prior notification. So,...what are some of the military's plans to prevent such incidents from happening again? North Korea has hundreds of drones or 'unmanned aerial vehicles in its possession... so there could well be more found in the coming days and weeks. The South Korean military says it's well equipped to deal with enemy jet incursions and attack UAVs, but it's much more difficult detecting these kind of ultra-small size UAVs. Seoul says it plans to purchase low altitude radar and other military gadgetry to prevent further infiltrations. Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it will take strong actions over Pyongyang's violation of its airspace,.. and will also mobilize units across the country to search for other drones. The ministry says it'll continue to evaluate possible routes and the damage the UAVs could cause while enhancing air defense operations system to better counter small size UAV infiltration. What do we know about Sunday's discovery of a third drone? The Defense Ministry said Sunday that a wild-ginseng digger first found the drone in October of last year on a mountain in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, and reported it to the military authorities last Friday. Initial investigations show the drone is the same model as the one that crashed in Paju late last month. Preliminary analysis also shows the computer components inside the drone contain chips and microprocessors released back in the early 1990s, but have long been obsolete. As you said, this is the third discovery like this and it is a worry as the South Korean military failed to detect these ones until they crashed on South Korea soil. There were almost certainly many more that made the flight but made it back to the North safely. Back to you Conn-young. That was our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin reporting about the ministry's future plans to counter small size drones... after a third suspected North Korean drone was found more than 1-hundred kilometers south of the inter-Korean border.- published: 07 Apr 2014

BREAKING NEWS - North and South Korea exchange fire across maritime border
The two Koreas traded live fire into the sea across their disputed maritime border on Monday, after Seoul said a North Korean military exercise dropped shells into South Korean waters. "Some of the shells fired by North Korea dropped in our area and our side responded with fire," a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told AFP. There was no indication that either side was firing at any particular target. Officials on the South Korean border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong said residents were being evacuated to shelters as a precaution. The North Korean live fire exercise began at 12:15 pm (0315 GMT) and the South began responding with its own volley of artillery shells within 30 minutes. "For the moment, both sides are firing into the sea," the JCS spokesman said. North Korea regularly conducts live-fire drills but, in an unusual move, it had notified the South of Monday's exercise in advance. The JCS had immediately warned it would respond in the event of any shells falling on its side of the border. The Yellow Sea boundary is an extremely sensitive region that has been the scene of brief but bloody clashes in the past. In November 2010, North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong island, killing four people and triggering concerns of a full-scale conflict. "The aim is to threaten us and rack up tension on the Yellow Sea border and the overall Korean peninsula," South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Wi Yong-Seop told reporters before the North Korean drill began. "The fact that they sent a message to us indicates their hostile intention," Wi said. -- 'New form' of nuclear test -- The exchange of fire came a day after North Korea threatened to carry out a "new form" of nuclear test -- seen as a possible reference to efforts to build a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a ballistic missile. Pyongyang has carried out a series of rocket and short-range missile launches in recent weeks, in a pointed protest at ongoing annual South Korea-US military exercises. On Wednesday it upped the ante by test-firing two mid-range ballistic missiles capable of striking Japan. It was the first medium-range missile launch since 2009 and coincided with a trilateral summit attended by the South, the United States and Japan that focused on presenting a united front to the dangers posed by Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. UN resolutions prohibit the North from firing any ballistic missiles and the UN Security Council said it would consider taking "appropriate" action -- a response that triggered the North's "new" nuclear test threat. North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests, the most recent -- and most powerful -- in February last year. Most experts believe it is still some way from mastering the technology required to build a miniaturised warhead -- a development that would be seen as a game-changer in assessing the North's nuclear arms capabilities. The de-facto maritime boundary between the two Koreas -- the Northern Limit Line -- is not recognised by Pyongyang, which argues it was unilaterally drawn by US-led United Nations forces after the 1950-53 Korean War. North Korean Sailors interviewed after return from South Korea
Pyongyang, March 29 (KCNA) -- The sailors who had come back to the DPRK from south Korea to where they had been taken were interviewed by domestic and foreign reporters at the People's Palace of Culture Saturday. Fishing boat captain Rim Chun Su, chief engineer Kim Chol and crewman Kim Thae Won belonging to the Ongjin Fishery Station spoke at the press conference. They spoke of how the fishing boat was seized by the south Korean military gangsters and the atrocities committed by them against its crew. They said: We left Kumi-ri, Ryongyon County at around 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon to pick up clams. As we were sailing while picking up clams, thick sea fog began to hang over as dusk fell. Finding it hard to do the work any longer, we veered the boat towards the port. A short while later, a propelling shaft stopped operation due to a gearbox trouble. We had no other way but to stop the boat and repair the boat. When we were judging the direction with a compass after getting it repaired, a clipper of the south Korean puppet navy appeared, blocking its sailing at full speed. It forced our boat to sail southward. The enemies fired bullets at the fishing boat to threaten us. We could not allow us to be meekly taken away by the puppet navy hooligans. In order to let our patrol boat spot our position, we made a ball of fire, lighted it and shook it towards the north. A short while later two small clippers appeared and began to encircle our boat. The clipper that had appeared earlier turned a search light on the boat, blocking its sailing. And the two other clippers sailed close to our boat on its both sides, forcing it to sail southward. As it grew completely dark, our engine stopped again, making it impossible to move any more. The clippers completely encircled our boat, brandishing iron sticks and throwing iron hooks at it. We fell unconscious, hit hard by iron sticks of the enemies. It was when the boat arrived in a place believed to be a pier of Paekryong Island that we came back to our senses. We were shackled and blindfolded. The hooligans of the puppet army took us to a certain building by a truck and asked us ages, names and others. They also asked us one by one if we had any idea of surrendering. We did not answer but just said we were fishermen and would go to the embrace of the respected Marshal at once. The enemies tried hard to make us change our minds, saying that "Come over to the south. If you surrender, we will make you live well. We will provide you with living conditions and jobs." The sailors fought back the enemies, defying their appeasement and pressure in order to come back to the fold of the motherland. So, they could come back to the embrace of the motherland at around 02:00 on Friday. Rim Chun Su said that it was only after he came back home that he learned the group of puppet hooligans could not but send them back in a great haste in the face of the strong measures taken by the motherland. He added: It was just several hours that we fought hard against the barbaric acts and pressure of the enemies to put us to submission. While fighting back the enemies, we realized what type the enemies were and made up our minds to settle accounts with them to the last. We also keenly realized through our experience the immutable truth that there is nothing to be afraid of and that we are sure to win even though we are left alone in the vast sea or are put in custody by the enemies as long as there is the respected Marshal. We firmly pledge to make redoubled efforts to carry out our revolutionary tasks with surging indignation at the enemies who are running amuck to hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership of the DPRK and its social system and thus further glorify our country. Then the sailors answered questions raised by reporters. At the press conference the participants watched a video dealing with the atrocities committed by the hooligans of the south Korean puppet army against the peaceable boat and personnel of the DPRK. -0-- published: 30 Mar 2014

Third suspected North Korean drone found on South Korean Soil
Our top story this morning... The South Korean military has discovered yet another small drone, presumably from North Korea, on a mountain in Gangwon-do Province, some 1-hundred-30 kilometers south of the inter-Korean border. We have our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin standing by at the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul... so Hyun-bin, it must be very concerning that this is the third drone found on South Korean territory in a matter of weeks... what countermeasures does Seoul plan to take? Hey Mark. The defense ministry announced a little over an hour ago that key commanders in every branch of the military held an emergency meeting in Seoul to discuss the drone infiltration. Led by defense minister Kim Kwan-jin urged all military to maintain flawless operation readiness from suspected North Korean drones from infiltrating and other threats from Pyongyang. Korean military are searching for possible additional drones in the country. We have a ministry briefing coming up in the next few minutes and I'll have more updates for you during the next newscast at noon, Korea time. Mark. That was our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin reporting about the ministry's future plans to counter small size drones... after a third suspected North Korean drone was found more than 1-hundred kilometers south of the inter-Korean border.- published: 07 Apr 2014

South Korean nuclear envoy meets with representatives of the U.S. and Japan
South Korea, the United States and Japan will hold a meeting of their top nuclear negotiators in Washington later on this Monday. The three sides will share their views on the security situation on the Korean peninsula and devise countermeasures against North Korea's nuclear threats. Shin Se-min reports. The newly appointed South Korean envoy to the six-party talks, Hwang Joon-kook is in the U.S. capital for talks with his American and Japanese counterparts on drawing up countermeasures and preventative steps to deal with North Korea's latest provocations. Hwang said it would be "unnatural" for the nuclear envoys of neighboring countries to not meet on the sidelines of the meeting. Meanwhile, Hwang said Seoul could not rule out the possibility that Pyongyang will make good on its threat to conduct another nuclear test. He also said it was too early to say whether the six-party talks between the two Koreas, the U.S., Japan, Russia and China that have been stalled since late 2008 would be up-and-running again soon.
